It’s a different, less commercial, way to go skiing. The mood is way more relaxed with a Mediterranean feel, Italy and Slovenia having their borders with Carinthia.
Set at the eastern side of Carinthia in Southern Austria, it is an alpine terrain that has a more gentle feel than the jagged peaks of the Tyrol. There is a lot more sun than other areas of the Alps – it’s called “the sunny side of the Alps” – and more snow.
Within less than an hour’s drive are the resorts of Koralpe, Weinebene, Helbalm and Petzen. Not much further are Bad Kleinkirchheim and Nassfeld. Or the Slovenian resorts of Bled and Kranjska Gora.
Christine Loike, a former Austrian world cup skier runs the ski school, a five minute walk from the chalet. Ewald Schuster runs the ski hire shop in the same premises (and keeps a fridge of cool beer and coke for the end of the day).
The atmosphere on and off the slopes is very relaxed, be it gluwein in the mountain huts or a beer in the Hochegger Hotel. www.hochegger-klippitz.at
